Whether you're a seasoned beachcomber or a curious beginner, the hunt for seashells and other ocean treasures can be a truly rewarding experience. Although we are always at the mercy of Mother Nature, there are a few things you can do to elevate your shelling game and increase your chances of finding those special pieces.
Just like they always say, timing is everything! And, it really is. Here are a few key times to find shelling success:
-Low Tide: Check your local tide chart before you head out. As the water recedes to low tide it exposes more beach, and, more importantly, more shells!
-Early Morning: Beat the crowds! The earlier you go, the less competition you'll have for the prime finds. Plus, there's a magical calm to the beach at sunrise.
-After a Storm: Storms stir up the ocean floor, dislodging shells from their resting places and washing them ashore. While the beach might be a bit messier than normal, the rewards can be incredible. Just be mindful of the weather and where you step!
Where you shell is important! Not all beaches are created equal, and their location really can determine what kind of shells you'll find. It helps to seek quieter, less crowded beaches off the beaten path. Great options include barrier islands and beaches near inlets, as their currents can help deposit shells. Don't forget to wade in the water to see what you can find! However, always be mindful of the current- safety first!
A great place to look while shelling is the wrack line. This is the dark line of debris that marks the high tide line. The debris could include trash, seaweed, mangrove leaves, driftwood, and, you guessed it, seashells.
Be patient and persistent. You won't have luck every single time, and that is okay! But, remember to appreciate the beauty around you, and I promise you will never be disappointed.
